Episode 18 – Waterfall Tour – Biking in Ecuador

We have been in a video frenzy lately due to our travels and adventures in Banos, Ecuador. To be honest, I don’t think pictures would have accurately captured our experiences. One of the must do/must see things in Banos is to go on a 60km downhill bike ride that happens to give you the opportunity to check out the waterfalls in the nearby area. While we only made it to the 30km mark, we made it to the most important waterfall, Pylon del Diablo. Biking in Ecuador has been phenomenal.

This trip has definitely pushed my boundaries. Never in my life would I have been so gung ho about hopping on a bike to ride that long. I’m quite proud.

Enjoy our time lapse of our bike ride. I admit, I’m addicted to time lapse.

  1. There are buses which take you back from the larger waterfalls, or you can ride a little way and hop on a passing truck 🙂

Nice video! I did the same trip back in July and it’s fun to see the place again!

  2. The ride looks so scenic, and the waterfalls are just gorgeous. Did you have to push yourself to ride the full 30km, or have you two been building up to it?

  3. I am such a chicken! As soon as I saw you riding on the side of the road, I got nervous!! But, it looks like a beautiful ride. Also, love the music. 🙂

  4. You’ve reminded me that I’ve totally forgotten about the time lapse app on my phone! I had cool plans for it and never followed through.

Kudos to you for being able to bike that long! O:-) I haven’t done that in years.

  5. I see you took the upper cable car on the “manto de la novia” waterfall. I took the lower one the day I went. Nice to see this video guys 🙂

  6. @Dad: There are collectivo trucks that pick up people and bikes to make your way back to Banos. Or hitch hiking… but that isn’t a subject I’ll breach with my dad due to heart attacks.

  7. @Patricia: It was almost entirely downhill (with a few hills as exceptions) so it wasn’t too incredibly taxing. Although, by the end of the few hours and hiking down to the last waterfall, we were pooped!

  8. @D: There really are trying moments when semis are whizzing by your head but, like we always say, “This is South America!” and we do as many have done before us. Thanks on the music front. It takes me forever to pick something out for these things.

  9. @Heather: There is an APP?! HOW COOL!

Yeah, the biking thing has been a long time coming. There is no way we could have done it at the beginning of the trip. We have gotten so much stronger!

  10. @Bethany: We just have too many ideas for our Go Pro – and I thought it would be better than a straight up photo post. Banos, Ecuador is so amazingly beautiful – especially when you can see the snow capped volcano.

  11. @Anthony: Thank you! It was hard leaving because there were so many things we wanted to do. Can’t stay in one place too long if we planned on making it to Buenos Aires!

  12. This is awesome guys! We’re in Banos and going to be doing this the day after tomorrow. Good idea to get a massage the next day right ? 😀 it’s a charming little town!
