Food Truck Friday: Burro Cheese Kitchen

Burro Cheese Kitchen-2 food truck friday

It was my turn to pick the food truck this week. What did this lactose intolerant girl pick? My holy grail; My forbidden fruit; Burro Cheese Kitchen – the one and only artisan grilled cheese sandwich spot found on our culinary list. With no Lactaid in sight, I shrugged my shoulders and dove right in. What is the worst that can happen, right?

*poot*

To show my dedication, Shaun and I arrived super early- only to find out that it would not be open for another 3 hours. In my cheese fueled desperation, we found ourselves looking for entertainment. Luckily we happened to be on one of the coolest streets in Austin, South Congress.

Ex-Seattleite Justin Burrow brought a simple idea into fruition with Burro Cheese Kitchen (). Great bread, artisan cheese, homemade sauces – all as a way to create a new type of cheese plate – a MOFOING GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH! *RAWR*

Remember how I said that I was a sandwich snob? Let’s just say I wasn’t disappointed. While this place can be considered a bit pricey, I damn near left with drool hanging off my chin after eating my sammie in a Cookie Monster frenzy. I’m a classy lady.

This is what we ordered:

Waylon & Willie: Beer Bread, Redneck Cheddar, Gruyere, Caramelized Onions, Pepperoncinis, Spicy Maple Bacon Sauce
Custom Sandwich: Sourdough Bread, Manchego Cheese, Smoked Prosciutto, Jalapeno Cream Cilantro Sauce
Side: Olive and Pickle “plate” (that comes in a huge ass container so be nice and share)

Depending on who you ask, you get different answers on who’s sandwich was better. Shaun was super mellow with complimentary flavors. Mine was a punch in the face (KAPOW!) flavor explosion that I was desperately craving. The bread was phenomenal (I need to find out where they buy it), their lemonade refreshing, and the ambiance of South Congress gives them a couple of extra imaginary kickass points.

Score: 4.5/5
Cost: $27
Ordered: 2 Lemonades, 1 Cup of Olives and Pickles, 1 Signature Grilled Cheese, 1 Custom Grilled Cheese
Favorite thing: CHEESE
Least favorite thing: The Price
Type of food: Artisan Sandwich

  1. OMG, those look so good. If I had known about this one I would have totally driven from Houston to Austin when we were there last week. YUM.

  2. After so much time in Southeast Asia I can’t help but fetishize both bread and cheese. Which basically makes Grilled Cheese my holy grail of foods. Which basically makes Austin my next domestic vacation spot.

  3. Cheese has to be my favorite food group. Yes I said food group. I’ve probably had about 8 bricks of UK mature cheddar in the 2 weeks that we’ve been here. We’re off to SEA next and I know we’ll be suffering big time. great photos!

  4. I think I am getting hungry after reading this post although I just had my breakfast. I love cheese and I should give this a try.

  5. YES. But the moment I see cream and cilantro together I’m all about it.

You know, I really love pickles but gherkins just don’t do it for me. *snicker*

  6. I’m SURE. After I came back from Japan I gorged on cheese. I can only imagine after how long you have spend there! Hurry up and get here! (Although I’m telling everyone to wait until May when we have our own place and a couch for people.)

  7. Yeah… that part was painful. I could have made it cheaper by not ordering the olives, pickles, and lemonade but I think it still would have been around $18.
