Food Truck Friday: Way South Philly

I furrowed my brow as I tried to understand the name of our most recent food truck, Way South Philly. Ooooooooh…. Like, as in, Austin is South Philly! Har har! I looked at the menu in a slightly horrified manner as Cheese Whiz made itself known as the main topping for most cheesesteaks. At least it is authentic?

Food Trucks

I honestly didn’t know where to start. I wanted EVERYTHING on the menu. All I know is that I had to fix the hole that was burning in my stomach from the Austin Hot Sauce festival and I needed something greasy and delicious to do it.

There has been more than one comment on their sites saying not to share a sandwich with a friend or run the risk of losing fingers or your friendship. Due to the fact that Shaun eats like a bird and I am on a workout regimen and crazy diet, we decided to share. But never fear! We went with the one stuffed to the brim with goodies:

The Lil Stallion: It’s covered, layered, & stuffed with Whiz, Tots, Mushrooms, Jalapenos, Onions, Peppers, & Seasoned Chopped Grilled Sirloin. Served on an Amoroso’s Roll.

But don’t kill me. I chickened out and went with the provolone. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t bring the canned cheese to my lips. I was having foodie PTSD and I’m okay with not having the “authentic” ordeal.

It was delicious. To be honest, Shaun gets incredibly annoyed at me because I’m a certified sandwich snob. The bread and the fillings have to be perfect. The inside of the philly cheesesteak was crispy and hot, while the Amoroso’s Roll was crunchy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. The tater tots inside the sandwich put me over the moon. This magical combination is surprisingly hard to find and I was on cloud 9.

While I don’t often crave cheesesteaks, I know where to go in the future when I need one. Are you a fan of cheesesteaks? Can you do the “Whiz”?

Score: 4/5
Cost: $11 (We shared one)
Ordered: The Lil Stallion Cheesesteak
Favorite thing: Tater tots
Least favorite thing: Not the cheapest thing in the world.

Type of food: Sandwiches

We do offer a gluten free option. It’s called the “Mickey”….

It’s basically a cheese steak on top of Tater Tots.
