Hometown Tourism: Barton Springs Full Moon Swim

“Aroooooooo!”

barton springs full moon swimHundreds of wolf howls could be heard echoing across the hillside and close buildings.

Either we’re surrounded by a pack of animals or a pack of crazy mad men. I guess in Austin you’re a little more likely to find the latter.

Welcome to the Full Moon swim at the Barton Springs pool in the heart of Austin, Texas. And while the full moon was hiding behind the grand trees hanging over the pool area, the howls were just as intense. How could you not feel chills as the moon looms over the clear Austin skyline?

The water was delicious and inviting after a 100 degree day. As we took a quick, brisk dip in the 68 degree water (year ‘round!) the howls started on one end of the pool and quickly caught on. Did someone make an awesome dive? Make sure to howl at them too. Hell, just start howling because you feel like it.

No one judges here.

Keep Austin weird, right?

The pool is free from 8-9am and 9-10pm ($3/day) – open 7 days a week. If you happen to be in town, make sure to check out the madness. Try to get there a bit early as parking does get a little iffy sometimes.

  3. It is so nice when you get out of the freezing water and the warm air hits your body. I’m all about free spas.

  4. Oh I have heard of Barton Springs so much and even though have been to Austin a million times, have never been. I didn’t know they had a full moon party. I will have to go for that one day when I’m back at home.
