Weekend Review: Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina

After our week on the road we arrived in Reykjavik rejuvenated and ready to relax and enjoy our last full day in Iceland. We went big. We went with the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina right on the water near downtown Reykjavik.

I’m pretty picky when it comes to spending our time and efforts in a hotel. There is just something I like about an authentic experience – but I do have to say that these guys blew me away.

Just walking into their art deco style designed lobby and bar brought a smile to my face. In true European fashion this place was clean with straight lines and colors. The bartenders at the popular hotel bar will proudly say they have the best drinks in town. With how many people are always crowded in, I believe it.

This just isn’t a hotel. It is a place to hang out when you’re not out exploring Reykjavik.

Each Icelandair hotel around the country is decorated in different ways – each with their own story. Like, the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura has a flock of wooden sheep (and a black one!) that they move around the hotel during the day. They are never in the same location. Or, how the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina features the story of two fisherman who came in out of the cold harbor to warm themselves by the fire. One wooden guy is sitting out in the lobby by the fireplace while one is… “relieving” himself at a nearby urinal.

And the rooms – albeit a bit small – are comfortable. They probably have the most comfortable pillows, blankets, and mattress. After a week on the road I just became one with the bed. One of the really cute things about the room was the self proclamation of it being small – “You should be spending time exploring Reykjavik, not spending time in the room!” I mean, the wall is decorated with the map of Southwest Iceland AND the bookshelves are covered in useful books about the area. I just haven’t seen that level of decoration and care before.

And the view! Oh God the view! While not overly glam, you have a view of the marina. I got to watch people weld a massive fishing boat. There is just so much flavor here. This place is just super rad.

The only downside is that as a couple it is very hard to “do your business” when there is a glass slidey door separating you, the bathroom participant, and the person watching TV in the room. Just hope for the best and I hope you are comfortable enough with the other person in the hotel room.

If you are into swanky hotels, the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina may be the one for you. Sure it isn’t on the super budget mode but every now and then you need a splurge to take care of your mental health. Give this place a go if you aren’t looking for the hostel experience.

  1. Looks very good to me with the quirky decor, comfortable lighting and the view from the room is amazing too 🙂

  2. We loved our time there! It was super cold outside with the snowstorm that was a brewin’ up north but so comfortable inside!
