Waking up on Wednesday was like waking up on Christmas morning. Our Machu Picchu llama picture (or “Bossy the Llama” to you old-school Over Yonderlusters) was #1 on the travel Reddit page and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Sure, I was preparing for the worst when it came to trolls and the like, but I was prepared to take on the day.

Little did I know that I had attracted the likes of the Huffington Post Travel page and they soon came a knockin’. It was official.

We had our first big break and feature on Huffington Post.

Machu Picchu Llama

I was shaking. I couldn’t believe that almost a year after the original pictures had been posted that it finally picked up and went viral. I knew they had potential. I guess it always comes down to finding the right person, right audience, and right time to post it.

Soon I was receiving messages left and right about “Bossy the Llama” sightings. We were retweeted by REI, Animal Planet, BuzzFeed, and HuffPo. We had appearances on Facebook pages of all kinds (Hawaii News Now), and cited on various news organizations around the world. One Peruvian newspaper even named me as being German due to my last name (*teehee*).

It has been overwhelming, awesome, and unexpected. I am so incredibly happy that I have been able to bring a smile to people’s faces or coffee out their nose (so said one commenter!). I’m taking our 15 minutes of internet face and reveling in it! 😀

  28. This is still one of my favorite photos EVER in the history of all photos. You know what’s funny, though, is a photo taken of me in 2008 apparently hit the top of Reddit this week, too, as a friend in Oakland sent me a screen grab. I’ve never done Reddit so was NOT prepared for the trolls…I made the mistake of reading the comments, many of which compared me to a horse. Oy!

  34. Yeah… I don’t dare put pictures of myself up there. I think my already low self esteem would plummet something fierce. I know people who use Reddit. I know how the internet works!

  43. I can’t tell you how long I made Gerard wait to get a good llama photo because of this! LOL.. Unfortunately, ours were hungry because all they did was eat at Machu Picchu. So boring.. Haha
