Photo Essay: Tarabuco Market – Markets in South America

Markets in South America

Welcome to another wonderful PHOTO ESSAY WEEK! While I’m sure we have a million stories, nothing can really describe the amazingness of the last few weeks we experienced in Bolivia.

Today we bring you the “off the beaten track but not really since there is a tour bus going out there” Tarabuco Market (Sundays only) outside of Sucre. By far one of the busiest and best markets in South America. You can buy tickets to this out of the way, indigenous town from most tour agencies in town. If you haven’t been to a million markets like we have, I’m sure it is quite exhilarating. However, we are now slightly jaded on the market front. That doesn’t mean there is any less character though – the pictures will explain below.

While I normally prefer pictures in bright, happy colors, I felt as though the defining factor of this market was the amazing details and textures that made themselves apparent throughout the day.

  1. YES YES YES! I was in Bolivia for over a month on a university trip and I absolutely fell in love with the country. I am so grateful that I get to relive my experience through your stories and pictures. Bolivia is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries that I’ve been to. I can’t wait to take Chris some day. Tarabuco market was one of my favorite stops.

  2. @Tawny: 3 Yeses? I think I just made a new record! Bolivia has won our “Most Stunning” award for sure. Everything is just so amazing and… authentic. I wish I would have felt better about taking my nice camera but I’m still super stoked how these turned out.

  3. @Margyle: Why thank you! I always LOVE taking pictures of livestock roaming the streets. We don’t get it much at home.

  4. @Heather: That is a good thing! I had a hard time picking which pictures to put up. There are still a few that I left out. <3

  5. @Audrey: A sight I’m going to miss. I love the community that is created through the market sale of the coca leaves. Like, it is an experience for a tourist and a lifestyle for the locals.

  6. Hey Guys

Loving the simplicity of the photo essay. No words needed. For me the B+W further adds to this as there are no distractions through colour. Looking forward to more! We are a travelling couple too who have just set up a blog.

Out of interest can I ask what camera(s)setups you use? 🙂

    Mike

  7. Hey Mike!

For me, the debate between color and black and white really makes the set. I could have done color for sure but we already know markets are colorful. People tend to overlook the textures involved. :

As for cameras, this was actually taken on a Canon Powershot point and shoot.

For most of my sets I’m on my Nikon D300s – usually with my 50mm 1.8.
