One of my favorite things to photograph – hands down – has to be anything industrial, decaying, peeling, and full of all that agey texture that only time can make into the perfect patina.
So I found myself in a steampunk heaven during the first 30 minutes of our Uyuni Salt Flats tour at the Cemetario del los Trenes, or the Train Cemetery. A “graveyard” of abandoned old trains that were an important part of Bolivia’s history. After the train tracks became moot, they all came here like dying elephants to spend the end of their days.

Very cool. I lived Bolivia for two years and missed this!
Forrest Walker: It is strange how that happens! Shaun lived in Arizona for 14 years and never saw the Grand Canyon!
How awesome is this place?? I like the angle on the 2nd photo but I think the top one is my favorite.
@Elle: Thanks for your feedback!
I love these kinds of spots!
Amaaaazing!
Thats reallly cool!
Great pictures! We did this on our last day of the Salt Flats tour (came from the Atacama) and took some great pics. Although the train graveyard itself was kind of disappointing after seeing all of the wonderful things on the tour itself!
@Tony: I wish I could have had the money and the time for the 4 day tour. I was looking forward to shooting some HDRs of the lagoons. <3
awesome photos and HDR, wow! I haven’t been to this place yet but surely, this one inspired me to travel and get through life as it comes. Thank you for this!
Cheers from the Philippines
@J&T: It is definitely an awesome place to check out!
Finally – gorgeous HDR that doesn’t bother me. I LOVE it!!!
@D: YAY! I have a hard time with HDR as well.
I saw a train graveyard in Bangkok, but it wasn’t nearly as cool as this…
@Raymond: AWESOME! I wish I had a few hours to wander around though. It would have been EPIC.
My favorite is the first one. The colors are wonderful.
@Pamela: Thank you! I love the colors in HDR!
Great pictures- might have quite a strange scene
@Emma: It was a really surreal scene. Hundreds of cars were just piled on each other.
Ha, it really is a steampunk heaven! I like the way the wheels have sunk halfway into the ground. It’s clear that these trains have been here for a looooong time (okay, and the rust gave it away some).
@Christy: The really cool thing is that there are engines and cars from all over the world. USA, Germany, Brazil, etc. Really freaking awesome!
Loved this place and your photos are brilliant. The top one the sky is amazing!!
Very cool shots! One of these days, I’ll have out how to do HDR.
@Stephanie: I can’t wait to see yours!
I went to this place and thought it was completely magical! We were taking a tour of the salt flats, and only stopped off there for 20 minutes or so. I could have stayed there for a lot longer. I remember someone had graffitied on the side of one train: in need of a mechanic with experience!
@Anne: I know! We only had 15-30 minutes here. TOTALLY not enough time. I wish I had a few hours to really grab some good pics.
Great, great, great! Anything titled Uyuni drives me to the post, and HDR shots too. Perfect! Now I need to go there!!
Uyuni drew me into so many posts as well Dina. Being there is quite magical and a must do if you get a chance.
