Photo Essay: San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you happen to find yourself in Buenos Aires on a Sunday afternoon, definitely head down to San Telmo to check out the Sunday Market. I couldn’t help but smile as it reminded me of the quirkiness of south Austin – musicians, antique markets, street art, performances, and the sweet aroma of food filled the streets.

Plan a few hours in this location as there is so much to see and do. Grab a cortado. Peruse the endless supply of empanadas. This area is ripe for people watching as tourists from all over the world flock here to take in the distinctly Argentine culture. Also take a small change purse to hand over to the street performers if you watch a show. These guys are professionals and take their craft very seriously. My favorite had to be the puppeteer.

Make sure to check in the middle of the main park square in the late afternoon for a free tango performance. If you’re on a budget, it is definitely a good way to check that off your Argentine bucket list.

  1. Wow, you really got some great photos that capture the colors and vibrancy of the San Telmo Sunday Market! Going there was one of my favorite things to do while living there, bravo!

  2. Such a fun neighbourhood! I visited the place at nighttime and this drumming party/samba session broke out in the middle of the streets. It was so much fun joining in the dancing! 😀

  3. @Jeremy: Thanks a bunch! It really was quirky and beautiful. I couldn’t help but take pictures. Glad I could help with a dose of nostalgia!

  4. @Audrey: That sounds like a SERIOUS party there! Would have loved to experience that – although – how late did THAT go?

  5. @Heather: I’m really in love with this set for some reason. I think it is just the quirkiness. 🙂

  6. @AMA: It can be a bit overwhelming at times but the energy of the performers is contagious. LOVED this part of Buenos Aires.

  7. @Joe: Thanks a bunch! The Sunday Market there is definitely a MUST. This was probably one of my favorite neighborhoods in Buenos Aires.

  8. San Telmo was my first stop in BA when I visited there years ago. I love how your pics capture how festive and colorful it is! You know what’s funny? I also have pics of that same puppeteer! Did you notice that the puppeteer and puppet’s socks match?

  9. Love San Telmo, and that last photo is brilliant. Hope you don’t mind that I pinned it 🙂

  10. BsAs is easily one of my favorite cities. So many great little charming neighborhoods.

  11. I’m so sad I wasn’t able to get over there when I was in Buenos Aires. I was only in the city for about 2 days, and not even 2 days in a row, so I just didn’t get to see much. Looks like you had a great day though!

  12. Gorgeous!! I had to drag myself from that fair to make it to the airport my last day. I was so sad!

  13. Great photos! It is one of those super-touristy things that is totally worth doing.

  14. I simply love how your photo essay has captured the emotions and true atmosphere of street life in Argentina. The photos of the dancers in particular are simply remarkable; you can see their emotions very clearly.

The the tone of your blog makes me want to keep reading more of your posts and I feel like just abandoning my mundane life, packing up and running away for an extended vacation somewhere exotic. Looking forward to reading more of your travel stories.
    Bon Voyage 🙂

  15. Absolute beautiful! The first one is my fav – love the tones.

  16. I will have to say that the neighborhoods are what make Buenos Aires. Every one is completely different from the next.

  17. Yeah, you’re going to need a little more time than that lol. I would suggest spending no more than a week here if you get the chance. You can see mostly everything in that time. 🙂

  18. Unfortunately I decided to wear my chucks while walking around and due to blisters had to leave earlier than I cared to.

  19. Thank you Anastasia! I hope to see you around here more often. 😀 I’ve been working on capturing more people in my pictures since it is something I’ve lacked in the past. I’m glad you enjoyed!

  20. I definitely tried to capture the colors I saw. I have to be picky about the pictures I choose or they would be a million pictures long.

  21. Thank you Camden! There was so much to shoot. Although, I did have some old men freak out because I took pictures of their merchandise.

  22. Any time lady! The place itself was inspiring (and probably one of the few places in Buenos Aires I actually loved).
