Sky Candy’s The Circus – Flying High on the Trapeze

Sky Candy Austin The Circus trapeze-1

When I was younger, I longed to run away and join the circus. Not only did I have a noticeably different life philosophy than my family (I thought I was the daughter of the milkman I was so different – but genetics kept me thinking otherwise), but my soul was made for the trapeze. My father lovingly called me “Changa”, or “Monkey”. I was climbing on everything. Little did I know that living in Austin would bring the circus right to my doorstep – in the form of Sky Candy Austin.

We were curious when we saw that they were running a production called “The Circus”. Little did I know I was about to head into their fifth theatrical production; This one written by Austin poet Danny Stack and directed by Sky Candy co-founder Winnie Hsia. The result? A highly polished acrobatic play following the “ups”, downs, and troublesome circus life circa the late 1800s. Accompanied by a live period piece band, an intermission of hooping, accordion playing, and sword swallowing and you have a new age, old-style circus ready to dazzle and delight.

My shutter wouldn’t stop. Great lighting, detailed costuming, and fab tricks lead to a wonderful set that I am incredibly honored to bring you.

Thank you Winne and Joanna for letting Shaun and I tag along to see your gorgeous production, “The Circus”.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I’m taking a class there soon, so this was cool to see. I look forward to seeing a future production.

  2. That looks like an absolutely beautifully detailed show! The costumes are incredible! So evocative of that by-gone era of circus performers. You managed to get some really incredible shots too!

  3. I think these photos are some of your best. You captured great moments with incredible clarity, and it looks like a really fun evening!

  4. Looks like fun! I’ve never been a fan of the animal stuff in circuses, but trapeze and the acrobatic stuff is awesome. A play about it sounds really interesting too. I’m sure there’s some trick to the sword swallowing thing but it still freaks me out!

  5. Terrified? Why? I don’t think I would try it too high but worst case scenario is you fall like 2 feet to the floor.
