Wanderlust Wednesday – St. Paul’s Cathedral, London

Do you ever get to a travel location and completely geek out? Shaun and I regularly visit London (I think we’re on #4 or #5 at this point) now, but in the beginning, everything was new, fresh, and incredibly nostalgic of my childhood. Now, how would that be considering I had never been there before? Because of locations like St. Paul’s Cathedral.

I’m going to apologize ahead of time to anyone living in England for the “blasphemy” that is about to come out of my mouth. This cathedral was the supposed steps during the “Feed the Birds” song in Mary Poppins. Yes, I know how cliche and horrible of a movie it is. Yes, I know people really don’t talk like Dick Van Dyke. But do you know how many times I watched that damn movie (mostly because my sister wanted to see it every day)?! Well over 200 times I would guess. Our poor VHS was falling apart at the seams by the end of it.

So I took a quick snap, giggled at all the pigeons, and proceeded to sing “TUPPENCE…. TUPPENCE! TUPPENCE A BAG!”

St. Paul's Cathedral

Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul’s
The little old bird woman comes
In her own special way to the people she call,
“Come, buy my bags full of crumbs;
Come feed the little birds,
Show them you care
And you’ll be glad if you do
Their young ones are hungry
Their nests are so bare
All it takes is tuppence from you
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag
Feed the birds,” that’s what she cries
While overhead, her birds fill the skies
All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares
Although you can’t see it,
You know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen, she’s calling to you
“Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag”

  1. Right? I think about London almost every day. We have a huge group of friends that live there. Oh that precarious visa….

  2. Loved the blog post. Big fans of the Poppins. When we were in London we did the same thing. Fun! Posting your post on my facebook.com/mywifesdamninheritance

  3. I dream to visit London. I think it is a city with a special atmosphere. Pubs, punk music. someday I definitely visit this city, London, be ready! 🙂

  4. I’ve been back 4 times now because it is so dreamy. It is interesting because it appears as though you either love it or hate it. For some reason it feels like home.
