Summer in Austin: Deep Eddy Pool

Deep Eddy pool, summer in Austin-2

Since we’ve missed that last few summers at home, we almost forgot what this season is capable of. With triple digits hitting most of the country, it is no wonder that I sit in my air conditioned oasis while staring outside in a bit of horror… WHO AM I KIDDING – I love the heat! Summer in Austin is one of my favorite times of the year.

Welcome to Texas, y’all! If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! What better way to brave the delicious heat than to head over to Deep Eddy Pool, an Austin icon and a perfect way to spend a summer day.

Built as a legitimate concrete pool in 1915, it is the oldest in Texas, pulling water from a nearby well. I don’t know about you but I personally get incredibly creeped out by chlorinated pools. There is just something wrong about coming out of water with my eyes bloodshot and smelling of bleach. Gives me the heebie jeebies. *shiver* I prefer my water au-natural, and for $3, this is a hell of a deal for a way to spend the day.

There are multiple entrances to Deep Eddy. As we were with a wee one, we spent most of our time basking in the sun on the beach entrance, where it slopes into deeper water for the “big kids”. If you’re a fitness nut, there are several lanes to do laps. I love to sit out and pretend I’m glamorously laying out at a beach club. Just ignore the squeals of delight and splashes from nearby children.

If you’re not into the shockingly cold water (65 to 75 °F/18 to 24C), take a blanket and sit under a shade tree on the hill. You can catch a summer breeze while wolfing down a Jim-Jim’s Water Ice (the all-natural, no sugar added YUMMY shaved ice), or hot dog… because nothing is more summery than a hot dog (‘MERICA!).

So next time you find yourself melting in Austin, take a couple of hours and head down to Deep Eddy. While Barton Springs has it’s own charm, I rather like being able to touch the floor of the pool without fear of slipping on mossy rocks.
