Travel Photography – Segovia Cathedral

I must admit, I have a sick obsession with black and white photos. The Segovia Cathedral will be bringing in this Photo Friday. It really caught my eye while we were traveling around Spain in 2010. This is when I really started to notice that architecture in Europe was so different and unique – I became kinda obsessed.

I really wish I had my wide angle lens last year. It would have made all the difference in capturing the whole cathedral.

Segovia

Segovia Cathedral is a Roman Catholic religious church in Segovia, Spain. It is located in the main square of the city, the Plaza Mayor, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The building has a structure in three tall vaults and ambulatory, with fine tracery windows set, and numerous stained glass. The interior is characterized by unity of style (late Gothic), except for the dome, built around 1630 by Pedro de Brizuela. Gothic vaults rise to 33 meters high and measures 50 meters wide and 105 long. The bell tower reaches almost 90 meters. The current stone spire crowning the tower, dating from 1614, was erected after a major fire caused by a thunderstorm. The original spire, entirely Gothic, was built of American mahogany had pyramidal structure, and was the tallest tower in Spain. – Wikipedia

  1. I have a thing for black and white photos too.

I’m starting a photo editing course this week. Maybe I’ll get closer to gaining those mad skills of yours.

  2. @Nick: I’m glad I’m not the only one. There is something that is captured in B&W that cannot be replicated with color. Good luck on the photo editing course. Honestly, you’ll learn quite a bit just messing around on your own. 🙂

  3. Which lens did you use? You capture most of the building still. Nice black and white. I like how B &W sets a mood for everything.

  4. Erica, there’s just something about black and white. Call me old fashioned, but for some reason in my eye black and white captures peoples hearts and imagination more. A niche shot you’ve got there. I’m hearing you about the wide angle lens as I’ve had my eye on one for a while, but there pretty expensive.

  5. @Jason: Sometimes I feel like MacGuyver when I’m taking pictures – using what I have on me to make the best of a situation.

  6. There are many times I wish I had a wide angle lens as well but traveling with one isn’t feasible for me. I get around this problem by shooting a few staggered shots and kindly asking Photoshop to magically make a panorama. In Photoshop, the feature is under file>>automate>>photomerge and then choose your files and select “auto”. When it’s finished you can even crop that sucker down to the size of a normal photo. Wha-bam. Enjoy 🙂

  7. Wow! So beautiful and I like how there’s a person walking by. I love black and white as well! (And a wide angle lens is on my wish list).

  8. You did such a justice to the cathedral. It really captures it. Segovia was a stunning city and I have many pics of that cathedral … none a close second to the one you posted. 🙂

  9. @Laura: Funny thing about the person… it was our lovely guide/hostess. Never noticed her there until I made the pic into black and white!

  10. @D: Why thank you! I have a sick obsession with architecture (along with my black and white). I could have stayed there much longer than our day trip – but you work with what you have!
