Travel Photography – The Grand Canyon Rain

Rain seems to follow Shaun and I no matter what location we visit. We were greeted with rain on our wedding day, the rainiest dry season in 20 years in Barbados, one of the rainiest winters in Madrid, and it rained on us when we were at the Grand Canyon. We had been talking about visiting the Grand Canyon for so long that we started our hike in when everyone was walking out.

I was determined.

If rain is going to follow me around for the rest of my life, I may as well get over it and enjoy the opportunity that I have to travel. Little did I know that ultimately, this was a drop in the bucket in comparison to the rain we would experience in Central and South America.

But to be honest, I was okay with it. How many people can say that they saw the Grand Canyon with an encroaching storm? Electricity filled the air with every lightning strike and the thunder echoed along the canyon walls.

And all I could say when we were there was, “….Wow.” And you continue to say that for hours. I got goosebumps and chills. This was one of the most amazing thing I had ever seen.

All I knew is that we were in for a crazy rain ride.

  1. Gorgeous photo! I used to work near the Grand Canyon, but Scott’s never been. So we’re swinging by there during our road trip this summer so he can see it for himself!

  2. @Kristin: Shaun lived in Arizona for 14 years (AND was a boyscout) and never had gone so it was his first time as well. Great drive out!

  3. I think ‘wow’ is quite an understatement. That is amazing! The right words are impossible to find, so I guess ‘wow’ will just have to do. Wow. 🙂

  4. Those clouds are awesome.

For what it is worth it always rains on my birthday and now I just look at it as a sign that every is new and it is a fresh start.

  5. Wow (yes I said wow too!) – Never been but I sooo want to go… (I think I said “I sooo want to go” about too many things :p )
Great photo… even if I can imagine how different it can be actually being there. WOW.

  6. @Angela: It was super windy when I was near the cliff so I had Shaun hold me pants while I leaned as far as I could without feeling unsafe.

  7. @Pete: The clouds are awesome but I wish I could have also captured the crazy rolling thunder and the wind that was around us!

  8. @Giulia: Wow is contagious apparently! ♥ I suggest camping out if you do go. The campsites are beautiful and it gives you a chance to really enjoy the canyon.

  9. I like the dark and stormy clouds overlooking the Grand Canyon! That’s my number one travel destination in the States when I return. I can’t wait to see it for myself!

  10. great shot. I was effing blown away by the Grand Canyon. Before our trip i was like “yeah yeah yeah, Grand Canyon, big hole, whatever” but the reality of it, standing on the rim and then hiking to the bottom was incredible. One of the best trips in the US I have taken.

  11. The Grand Canyon was one of my favorite places to visit when I lived in Northern Arizona. I’m glad you had a chance to visit while in the area. Many a days were spent hiking its trails and retelling its remarkable history.

    Congratulations on one year!

  12. @Connie: The thing that I like is that most people will not be able to experience the Grand Canyon like we did. I would still go back for a second look though!

  13. @Josh: Blown away is definitely a good way to put it. I just had no clue how amazing it would be… like REALLY. I wish we had more time to hike to the bottom but I am happy we had the chance to see it.

  14. @Steve: Thanks! I have a friend that lives in Flagstaff and refuses to leave he loves it so much. I have to admit, when we went in August it was 70 degrees or so and absolutely stunning.

  15. Nice perspective Erica. I know it’s quite hard to capture the grand canyon in all it’s glory without either a seriously wide angle lens or a series of images stitched together. If the rain follows you as much as you say, then I’d be taking a blow up canoe with you when you get to the tropics latter this year. Happy Birthday for your blog as well.
