Washington DC: Keep it classy!

I really liked Washington DC. I mean, what is there NOT to like? The place is OOZING with history.

But by the end of our road trip, I just felt this gaping hole without Shaun. These were places we said we would explore together – just like Chicago. We were looking forward to being museum nuts together. We were going to take silly pictures in front of monuments together.

And while Diana and I just kinda wandered around getting into trouble, I was really wishing that Shaun was there to experience it all with me.

I’m ruined. There is no way I could ever do solo travel. I kinda like having my husband along for the ride.

But, about getting into trouble…

Did you know if you start walking into places to look around, the weirdest things will happen?

Like, how we walked up to the Lincoln Theatre (they were closed) and asked it we could be let in to look around… and they opened the doors for us? We were allowed the entire theatre to ourselves for 5 minutes. Creepy. Cool. Awesome. Mind EXPLODE.

Or how we walked into a hotel just to see what it looked like inside and the guy at the window gave us a key to a room to check it out? While the guy was a bit old, awkward, and creepy, that doesn’t take away from the fact he handed us the keys and let us have free reign.

Or how we happened to pass the PETA office (Diana’s eye caught a elephant statue that was against circuses and she had to take a picture) and got invited in by one of the main PR ladies to talk to Diana about the Elephant Nature Park?

It was like walking into a church. I knew I wasn’t supposed to be there and started sweating and thinking that I was about to burst into flames at any moment.

I like meat. And venison jerky. And leather. And fur. And my wool peacoat. OH GOD THEY CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH ME!!!!

We escaped unscathed and with a cold cup of water to help us beat the heat. HOW DARE THEY BE NICE!

And after taking a peek at the White House (OMG SO AMAZING), we ended our time in DC at a travel tweet up where I somehow ended up drinking way more than I thought I would, binging on $.15 wings with Steph from Twenty-something Travel, sending absurd pictures to Shaun, and having it end on an impromptu ladies night at a random bar with a DJ (courtesy of Megan of Guess What Megan Did This Time?) with Diana, Steph, Megan and Kelly from Flip Flop Caravan, heckling men in suits awkwardly dancing and women drunkenly falling off stools on a Tuesday night.

Keep it classy DC.

Our road trip was over. To be honest, I was ready to go home. I love Diana. She is a seriously awesome lady. And while she does make a decent bed mate that doesn’t steal covers or kick, I was ready for my life bed mate. 😛

I can’t wait to bring Shaun here to really explore. We successfully avoided the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, or anything remotely resembling a museum. I still consider myself a DC virgin darn it.

And next time we’re coming with a nerdy museum vengeance!

  1. Thanks to your post, I was reminded of a great (if not damp) week in the D.C. area this past April, as I began my year-long RTW travel. Two of my highlights are walking around the U Street historical district, and getting a bite at Ben’s Chili Bowl, landmark not only in the same area but famous around the nation.

Thanks again for the memories, Erica and Shaun!

  2. I’m really glad we drank too much and I puked through my nose the next morning. It was good times. that’s actually a good picture of me too! Sweeet.

  3. This brought back my first solo trip after settling in with my better half. It stunk. A lot. I mean, I went to a Jazz fest, great restaurants, explored new museums and a zoo — all things that I love. But, it still stunk.

On the upside: Your first photo is amazing. The sky is so blue! Filter or post-production?

  4. Yay! So glad you were here. You (and Shaun of course) are welcome back anytime! I can probably even russle up a couch for you to sleep on.

  5. What a way to start a RTW trip! We did go to Ben’s but the pictures were kinda meh. I’m sure I’ll talk about it in the future. It was an interesting experience for sure. Thanks for popping by to say hello!

  6. OH GOD. You guys were a little silly on the train back to the car. Sorry about the nose puking. At least we had fun?

  7. Isn’t it horrible?! To be surrounded by awesomeness and still feel empty?!

Also, this was done on my iPhone and then I slapped it in Snapseed.

  8. Next time you’re there, Gav and I will have to find a way to meet up with you! And if you want to go wine tasting in central Virginia, we’ll be happy to host you 🙂

  9. After seeing the “iPhoneography” going around I thought I would give it a shot and I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I was wandering with a iPhone 3G and recently updated to a 4S. It makes all the difference in the world. AND easy to take around!

  10. I love D.C. I lived there for a short time and if I get dragged out of New York kicking and screaming, I will probably move there. You do have to go back and do the touristy stuff, but be careful because you might fall in love with the city. It can be very beautiful. I hear you about missing a significant other. I missed my husband the three weeks I was in India.

  11. LOVE that second photo in the metro with the crazy ceiling. And I can relate – solo travel is ok, but traveling with my husband is so much better than anything else!

  12. Hahaha I LOVE your analogy about the church and bursting into flames inside the PETA office! Me and a friend had to take an exam in a church at uni…we finished it and got out of there as quickly as possible and headed to the bar. We were the first two to finish and our scores…well, let’s say the vodka we consumed in the bar helped us to forget the pain of the test.

ANYWAY, DC looks amazing! I’ve been umming and aahing about whether or not to go there next year but you, my dear lady, have convinced me. The photos are awesome, and I do love me some history to go with my city.

  13. I feel like I just added a million cities to your itinerary. I hope you have enough money to see them all! LOL

DC is really cool. Completely different than what I thought.

  14. These are some of my favorite pics of yours yet (I know I keep saying that…but you keep one-upping yourself!). Love, love, love the first three shots–how fun is that metro to photograph?! And like Fede, I love that DC has so many gratis offerings!

  15. Should I be concerned that you like more of my iPhone pics than my regular photography?! 😛

But to be honest, I love my phone. Best. Investment. EVER.

  16. Whoa, really?! Even more amazing! iPhoneography is a whole skill set of its own (one I’ve yet to master).

  17. You girls look like you had fun! I don’t like solo travel, yet I do not have a husband: discuss.

  18. Sounds like you had a great time! I love D.C. It really is oozing with history, and the museums are world-class. I love that the whole city has this sense of importance…probably because you know there are important things happening on every corner. I know what you mean about missing hubs, though–I sometimes get bummed on trips without Bryan when I wish I could share cool moments with him. Hopefully you and Shaun can go back together soon!
