Normally I kinda do my own thing for Friday Foto (#FriFotos) but I couldn’t help myself this week when it was announced that the theme would be MARKETS.
I can’t even start to explain my love affair with markets. My stomach fills with butterflies and I’m always super excited to see how locations differ from the next. A market in Guatemala is completely than a market in Argentina.
If you’re looking for a way to become intimate with the culture you are visiting, this would be the way to do it. Learn the natural geography at a farmers market. Get to know culture at artisan fairs. Realize you’re in a farming community when you’re surrounded by cows.
I nearly got run over by an abuelita on a steep hill at the San Francisco El Alto market in Guatemala. This 70+ year old lady was easily carrying 40 pounds on her shoulder and head and as she nimbly made her way down the hill I made the wrong move – and managed to get bulldozed, nearly missing a chicken coop.
You’ll always be in for an adventure. Make sure to to visit one in the neighborhood you find yourself in!

I love markets too! One thing I have learned about myself through my travels is that I’m always happy to spend a couple hours looking at (and hopefully tasting) local food in this kind of setting.

YES. The tortillas spoiled me. I can’t eat corn tortillas back home without rolling my eyes and wishing for a homemade one.
