A Lack of Hobbits in Middle Earth, Ecuador

We stepped off the bus into unfamiliar territory as a cloud of smoke and dust plumed around us and the bus lurched away. Ominous clouds formed overhead (attributing to our rain curse of course) and Shaun and I looked around curiously. So this is what “Middle Earth” looks like. Or, in other words, the quaint tourist trap that every traveler finds themselves in. While this isn’t considered a World Wonder by any means, it is still pretty neat. I couldn’t help but wonder what person thought it was a fantastic idea to capitalize on being at 0° 0′ 0″ S. [...]

Who the Hell Goes to Quito, Ecuador?!

We made our way back to Quito, Ecuador from Montanita due to a skatepark Shaun wanted to cover on his Boarderless skateboarding blog. Honestly, I wasn’t thrilled to visit. After hearing about several thefts of camera gear from multiple people, I was a bit concerned about running around with all the gear that we do. It started out a rocky relationship. We arrived at 5am, no hostel booked. Hell, we’ve been following rainy season/low season since we left Mexico 8 months prior and we were used to the who Latin American way of handling things. Show up, figure out what [...]

Hostel Hopping with Hostebookers!

Oh how time flies and we’re already in the epic country of Peru. While we do have other plans for 2012 it is weird to think we’re already on our last leg of this tour. And while we have been hostel hopping and Couchsurfing to push though the last bit of our budget, we are proud to announce our most recent partnership with Hostelbookers.com! Some of our accommodation will be sponsored and we will be able to give you down to earth reviews and pics from the awesome hostels you can find in South America (and beyond!). We have used [...]

A Fiery Start to the Year in Montanita, Ecuador

***I know we’re a bit late on this post but better late than never?*** I think there is something wrong with us. We knew we had to get from Medellin, Colombia to Montanita, Ecuador in one day and somehow we took a 22 hour travel period with no complaints. I think my patience is becoming a bit too good. Should I be worried about having a flat butt by the end of this due to the endless sitting? We’re getting damn good at it. We did arrive a bit dirty and tired when we showed up to Stephanie of Twenty [...]

Over Yonderlust's Travel A-Z

After being nominated by both D Travels ‘Round AND Breakaway Backpacker, I figured I might as well give this a shot. So here I go on the bandwagon! A: Age you made your first international trip I personally don’t count Mexico as I was brought up in El Paso and we used to go over the border (pre 9/11) for lunch. Shaun and I experienced our first international trip via our honeymoon at a ripe old age of 20/21. Needless to say I was the only one old enough to rent a car on the island and had to drive [...]

We’re making this week a video week (we’re making up for lost time due to our stolen camera)! We finally left Colombia after spending 6 glorious weeks there (and had only intended on 2). Since we got our replacement camera in Bogota, we are missing quite a bit of our adventures in Colombia but I hope you enjoy the bit we do have!

After wandering the streets of Banos, Ecuador looking for a decent wifi connection, we finally bring you Episode 15 – one I’m so proud of and I’m stoked to show you. This one goes down in history as one of the most special nights on our travels and one I will hold dear to my heart forever. Troy of FOGG Odyssey and I collaborated on this one, each providing our own content to each other to cover all angles. I am looking forward to projects like this in the future and keep your eyes peeled on his blog for his [...]

Photo Friday: Cali, Colombia

I know I didn’t show much of the actual city of Cali due to the insane salsa workout we were on, but thought I would give you a small glimpse of this very cute city.

Chivas - Crazy in a Tin Can: Medellin, Colombia

For 2012, Shaun and I will be trying a different kind of writing for some posts… known as Erica and Shaun type like they would talk posts. So, for our first one, here we go. Feedback would be appreciated on if you would like to see this more in the future. Add “Riding a Chiva during the holidays in Medellin, Colombia” to the “Crazy Ass Shit I Did on My Travels” list. Good lord. Where do I even start? Lets start at the end and then do a flashback to the beginning so there is confusion and suspense! This isn’t [...]

Finding Dixie in Medellin

Somehow when I think of Medellin, Colombia, I don’t think of bands playing old timey, ragtime music that I find myself attracted to when I’m in Austin, Texas. In discovering Medellin, I quickly learned that nothing is what it seems. One of our friends graciously invited us to see his band, the Medellin Dixie Band, perform. I really didn’t want to get my hopes up. I had seen his talent shine on the guitar before – but seriously, Dixie? In Medellin? COLOMBIA? My socks were officially blown off. In amazing renditions – my favorite being St. James’ Infirmary – were [...]
