Photo Friday: Icelandic Horses

It was love at first sight.

Sure they are a little stumpy and rotund but they kinda reminded me of… well.. me.

You can see Icelandic horses everywhere while traversing the Ring Road however it isn’t often that you see them super close to the fence. You can imagine my glee when I hopped out of the car and they were more than willing to get up and personal. They even liked you more when you brought grass that was just out of reach.

I did learn one very important thing from our tour in the Golden Circle – NEVER call them ponies. Breeders will get very angry at you. They are just stumpy horses. Stumpy horses that have 5 gaits. Stumpy horses with 5 gaits that can no longer be called Icelandic horses when they are moved from the island.

They are very serious about this stuff.

But the horses are amazing. Enjoy!

  1. They’re so cute! Did you get to ride one? We weren’t the biggest fans of the ride itself but loved taking photos of them afterwards.

  2. HAHA! You really should have seen the look on my tour guide’s face when they got called ponies. PRICELESS. Love it!

  3. Isn’t it crazy! And they are super furry in comparison to regular horses. I could have stared at their flowing hair all day.

  4. They’re so pretty! I tried horseback riding during summer camp when I was about 9 and did not enjoy it. But I still think they’re gorgeous animals. Love your pictures!

  5. Really gorgeous photos and I didn’t realize they were so special to Iceland. Been dying to go there so now I have one more very important reason. To meet my horse counterparts.

  6. Their hair is so flowy. I’m super bummed we didn’t get the chance to ride one – the experience with the 5th gait is supposed to be insane.

  7. Absolutely gorgeous!! Waking up to the sound of a horse running towards me while camping near the Grand Canyon is one of my favorite memories. Reminds me of this.
