I started my small obsession with Australia really young. I kid you not, it may have been completely due to the Rescuers Down Under – but that doesn’t negate the fact that it sparked a little fire inside me that I haven’t been able to shake for almost 20 years.
So I have my little list of things to do when we happen to finally find ourselves in Sydney – the Land Down Under.
- Visit the Sydney Opera House: Yes, it is cliche but if you have seen any of our previous posts I thrive on things like this. Finding myself at touristy things makes me giggle. Not only do I get to see an icon, but I find myself surrounded by crazy old women in visors and sweat pants. That and I would love to catch a performance there. Hardly anyone actually goes in!
- The Australian Open of Surfing: We will have to find ourselves there during their summer in February but I would love to finally be able to see a massive surfing competition. Big waves and beaches get me all giddy inside. I like to pretend I can surf but seeing the pros gives me inspiration to try better.
- Sydney Harbor: To add to the “things everyone has done but still needs to do” list. I’m all about harbors. Not only can you find some awesome food but this one has amazing walks, boardwalks, and ferries to see the sights. Maybe we will get lucky and befriend someone with a private yacht?
- Bondi Beach: Have you ever heard that I’m the happiest when I’m at the beach? At 8km away, this gem is always crowded – and for a good reason. If I want to get my game on with surfing (or my tan on doing nothing), this is where I would spend a majority of my day.
- Go Hiking in the Blue Mountains: This UNESCO heritage site is only about an hour away from Sydney and is great from when you need to take a break from the city. While we’re not super hikers, I do enjoy the occasional easy hike through the mountains. There are trails of all kinds!
- And finally… Hang out with our friends! We have met such amazing people from the Sydney area over our travels. I can’t wait to see them again and grab a beer on their own turf!
My list can go on but these are some of the things we must do when we get to Sydney one day. If I don’t keep the priority list short, it would take us a year and a half to see everything I’ve dreamed about as a little girl. Are you interested in visiting Sydney? What things should we add to our list?
