Hometown Tourism: Poi, Hooping, and Henna with Henna Kim

Whether it is teaching Samantha Brown to hula hoop and giving her henna, giving massages to Thievery Corporation or Radiohead, being featured in RARE magazine, being named one of the top 112 things to do in Austin via the Austin Monthly Magazine or making everyone feel just at home with her contagious and warm energy – Kim of Henna Kim is one busy lady!

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing this woman for the past 11 years – way back in the days of when I used to be a counter girl for Forbidden Fruit Tattoos and Piercings. She was the in house henna girl for the shop and I feel so lucky to have been able to be her friend after all these years. You may recognize her from my Eeyore’s Birthday post!

If you find yourself in Austin and are looking for a unique experience, THIS IS THE GIRL TO GO TO. Not only does she had her finger on the pulse of Austin at all times, but she is so incredibly talented. She is a fantastic teacher and artist and can she can leave you feeling refreshed and revived.

Hooping:

This lady rocks it. Not only did she make the collapsible hoop that I take backpacking with me, but she has a plethora of other hoops for sale. If you buy a hoop she will teach you how to get started. If you just want to give it a whirl (<–har har see what I did there?) she also gives lessons for that. Not only is it incredibly relaxing but exercise to boot!

Look at her rock her moves on a cruise ship!

A few from a photoshoot we did at her house:

Poi (also known as fire spinning):

She also gives lessons for poi as well! I’ve tried. I suck. She has continued to convince me to try it and believe it or not I didn’t suck nearly as bad last time I took a lesson! She also spins for events and honestly, this lady gives me goosebumps. In an incredibly cliche way, “She becomes ONE with the fire.” 😛

Henna:

Ever wondered what a tattoo would like like on you? Ever been curious about henna? Kim is a 15 year veteran at mehndi (the art of applying henna) and her creations are always so stunning. She also did a special session for me and my friends before my wedding (and no, I don’t have the pictures digitized. They are in a box somewhere – so goes the life of a travel blogger.)!

Massage:

She is a masseuse extraordinaire. Seriously, I can’t wait to visit her at her house because you are always guaranteed to get a little massage loving from Kim.

Oh God…. *drool*

Feel like doing all of the above?

Kim has getaways at her house. Extra rooms to stay in, a sauna, massage, henna, hooping, poi, await you if you’re looking for an escape and an amazing experience.

Seriously. Get a hold of her. She is AH-MA-ZING! Tell her Erica from Over Yonderlust sent you.

Discloure: I did NOT receive any payment from Kim to post amazing things about her. She really is that fantastic and I think she should succeed in life being her and doing the things she loves.

  1. She seems amazing!!!! What a gift, I couldn’t hula hoop to save my life!

  2. This is Amazing! Every city should feature someone who provides hooping and henna! What a wonderful service for adults and kids!!!

  3. I have tried hula hooping as part of salsa lessons. One thing I learned, I suck at hula hooping as much as salsa dancing. I need a full time tutor!

  4. Oh, she could get you hooping. People swear they can’t until they meet Kim. She is such an amazing teacher.

  5. But then there would be no reason to visit Austin! 😛

But I do understand. Hooping should be everywhere. It is such an awesome exercise and it really relaxes me.

  6. I love this post! What a unique person and a unique getaway. Awesome find you guys and you are so lucky to know her!

  7. Me neither! It is one of those things I have NEVER been able to do!

Erica, if you ever make it to SF, I need to set you up with my former running buddy, Autumn, who is a yogi and a firespinner (complete with tattoos!) and who you would just love =)

  8. Thanks Bethany! I always wish her the best with living out her dream and I can only pass the good karma on, ya know? She really is a fantastic person.
