After we drove out from San Francisco, we were left with the feeling that our trip was finally coming to an end. Our time of freedom was coming to a close and we wanted to make sure to enjoy the rest of our trip to the fullest. Shaun would be going back to his graveyard shift at Blizzard and I would be going back to my daily grind while we waited for our trip to South America.
In true travelers fashion, we did not want the rest of our trip (and beyond) to be the death and decay of our experiences and decided to relish in the moment. We were going to meet our dear friend Kevin in Los Angeles and decided to take the out of the way and breathtakingly beautiful Pacific Coast Highway to get there.
It took us a shockingly 10 long hours to get to Los Angeles due to the construction on the highway. You wouldn’t be able to tell how time consuming it was as Shaun took his 2003 Subaru WRX careening around the crazy curves around the rocky coastline. He was like a little kid on Christmas morning and was a trooper, driving the entire way. I don’t think he would have given up the keys if I begged him to.
I will let the pictures speak for themselves; it was a truly magical experience.

That was one beautiful ride!
Being a California native, this is one of my favorite places to drive. Love the pictures!
Great photos Erica. I’ve driven this route many times between San Fran & San Diego and it never gets old!
Great shots! You bring back so many memories of the beginning of our trip – first San Fran, and now the PCH! Fun times 🙂
Gorgeous pics! I did this same roadtrip years ago and I still have such fond memories of it!!!
Really like the motion in the photos, nice work.
I always love “on the road” pics… but these are super amazing!
And after all, the journey is part of the destination =)
@Kris: It really took my breath away.
@Samantha: I really didn’t know of this ride until some old coworkers from Cali mentioned it. So amazing!
@Beth: I am so glad Shaun did not mind driving the whole way.
@GTG: We can’t help it that they are amazing places to go!
@Andi: I learned that I really love road trips. I wasn’t even tired of driving when we came home. I could stare out the window all day.
@Ayngelina: Thanks! There were a few that I felt it added to the picture. While I did get out of the car for some pictures during our trip, I feel as though they capture the essence of road trips.
@Guilia: Thank you! *blush* I’m just starting to really like some of my work. As for the journey, I couldn’t agree more! ♥
I LOVE that drive!! Your photos are amazing, especially the side mirror one. You guys have the zest for travel/life that people dream of having. I can’t wait for you guys to finally head south — I will be living vicariously through you guys with extreme, but mature-ish, jealousy. 😉
@Abby: Thank you lady! I am so lucky that Shaun doesn’t mind me dragging him all over the place (and he may even admit to liking it). When we head south, I’m going to bother you with so many Costa Rica questions you’ll be more annoyed than jealous. ♥
Great photos again! It’s been a few years since I road along that highway…nest time I do so I will have my camera poised too 🙂 Did you see any seals from the rocks?
@Fede: I didn’t sea any marine life during our trip – kinda disappointing actually. I thought I saw a whale and it turned out to be a rock. I was heartbroken.
Gorgeous! I can’t wait to make this road trip again someday!
@Margo: I am so glad I was finally able to experience it. So beautiful and surreal.
